you should be focusing on reducing your body fat to below average levels and not just the BMI. the BMI does not take into account the amount of muscle and fat that you have

It's hard to say, as there are a number of factors that can affect your BMI. In particular, your bone density (obviously the denser your bones are, the more they weigh) and the proportions of your body: if you have a long torso and short legs, your BMI will be higher than if you have long legs and a short body. As an example, my BMI is over 29, suggesting that I'm close to obese, yet all my clothes are "medium". I think that the most important things are to eat a good, balanced diet and to feel comfortable with yourself. By far the easiest way to look slimmer is to choose good quality, well fitting clothes that suit your shape.

I'm at a healthy BMI and still look a little fat. This is because I have a small frame size, so should be nearer the bottom of the range, instead of near the top, where I am at the moment.

To decide your frame size, look at the following issues:

1 Ring size. Are you average, medium or small?

2 Shoe size and in particular, width. People with narrow feet often have small frames.

3 wrist size

4 general "look". Do you look slight?

BMI is very inaccurate because of the difference in frame sizes. You used to get 3 different charts, but now there just seems to be one. Just look at yourself in a mirror without clothes and try to judge if you have a lot of excess flab. If so, then you should be aiming to go a little down the range, perhaps to a BMI of around 20 rather than viewing 25 as acceptable.

It depends on how much of your total body weight comes from fat. You can have a BMI of 18 and still look flabby if you are all fat and no muscle.

Best to go by your body fat percentage rather than BMI.
