Like many of these stories there are several levels of understanding.
I suppose the basic message in todays context is that if a person were to believe and obey God even if it meant that he would pay for it with his life then God would act on that person's behalf.
It looks like Danial didn't know that he wouldn't be eaten, he just trusted god and did what God wanted.
I think they call that faith don't they? Believing/trusting and take the consequences.

It is one of many symbols of Christ, condemned to die for His righteousness, and raising from the grave.
The hardest part of Daniel's writings is Chapter 12, verses 11, 12. It is the only part of the Bible that was "closed and sealed up until the end of the days." You can break the code at http://abiblecode.tripod.com

That section of Daniel is a record of a historical event. Because of Daniel's refusal to abandon his religion, he was sentenced to be executed. However God delievered him from death.
Being the record of an event, rather then a teaching, there is not a whole lot of "messae" in it - other then to follow his example and also refuse to abandon your faith in God.

Go and read a proper book and stop wasting your time on religion. It is the root cause of almost all the worlds troubles as it is followed by a bunch of hypocrites whichever one they choose. They all seem to preach about peace and love but at the end of the day none of them can get along with each other as they are so intolerant.
