Mine claims it has, but wont allow me to get nearer than 18". I dont call that "capable".

I want to be able to duplicate old b/w photo's. Do you think a scanner would be a better option?

A scanner is definitely a better choice, but I have a Canon S3is that has Macro and Super Macro. I can literally take a picture of something that is almost in contact with the front of the lens!

I recently posted a new tutorial page about shooting old pictures with your digital camera. Here's the address:

if you want to duplicate photos, a scanner will be better.

but for a camera with macro mode... a lot of camera nowadays have it. The Canon Powershot A570 IS for example, allows you to take pictures as close as 5 cm (2 inch) from the subject when you're on the wide end and 30 cm (~1 feet) when you're on the tele end.

The A570 IS is pretty affordable at below $200 and takes good pictures but if old pictures is all what you want to do, a scanner is best for you.

A scanner would be a better option.

If you still need true macro from a camera, then I recommend getting a DSLR/SLR with a 1:1 macro lens.

I think your best option would be photo editing software such as Photoshop. I don't know much about cameras, but I know a lot about Photoshop, and you can replicate pretty much any kind of photo condition you can think of, old photos, B&W, faded, even torn if you wanted.
