First of all, priests and nuns serve two different purposes in the Church, so they can't be lumped together.
We don't "need" nuns and monks to get to God. Choosing religious life as a monk or nun is simply following St. Paul's injuctions in the New Testament that those who are single and unmarried are better able to concentrate on spiritual things. The most important thing monks and nuns do in the Church is PRAY. They pray at least 8 hours a day - for themselves, for others and for the Church. In the simple life they lead without worldly distractions, they find it easier to commune with Christ.
Priests, on the other hand, have a different mission. Like the priests in the Old Testament they are the channels of God's grace which is given to us in the Sacrament.
And yes, we need them, or why would the Church have instituted Holy Orders?
Through the priests we receive regular communion. Jesus Christ said "Unless you eat my flesh and drink my blood you will not have eternal life."
Through the priests we receive absolution (God's forgiveness of our sins). Scripture says "confess your sins freely to one another."
Oh, and every Catholic I know does pray directly to God. There's no Catholic teaching against it!

by means of fact Christ Himself instituted the Sacrament of Reconciliation and Penance (aka, Confession): John 20:23 Of whomever sins you remit, they are remitted to them. Of whomever sins you save, they are retained. That non secular authority has been exceeded down from the Apostles to the monks, who act as a conduit for God's love and mercy. we don't ought to sit down down around and sweetness whether our prayers for forgiveness have been heard: we get carry of Absolution and recognize that it has come from God in the process the guy of His priest. devil won't be able to torment us with guilt and all those "Are you truly confident that God heard you?" traces that he likes to apply. we are able to turn to him and say, "i became into forgiven of that sin on such and considered one of those day with the aid of sacramental Confession and Absolution. end of undertaking!" except you have ever been to Confession, you truly won't be able to understand the sensation of peace and purity featuring being set loose out of your sins

you can. but the same reason people look to reverands, pastors or any other religious theologian - their job and calling is that of Scriptures & God. these people study and dovot their lives to God abd speading His Word. God told us to bring the gospel to others. He told us that some would be first or second and some would teach.... Their calling is to teach.
if everyone tried to unterprut the scriptures comepletely on their own there would be a gazillion thoughts. however, when learned people get together, learn, pray and share - amazing truth can come to light through God's Grace.

2Co 12:28-31
8And in the church God has appointed first of all apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then workers of miracles, also those having gifts of healing, those able to help others, those with gifts of administration, and those speaking in different kinds of tongues. 29Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Do all work miracles? 30Do all have gifts of healing? Do all speak in tongues[a]? Do all interpret? 31But eagerly desire[b] the greater gifts.
And now I will show you the most excellent way.

The curtain was rent and no longer is there anyone between God and us again. Jesus is the way, call to the Father in the name of Jesus Christ. He is the truth, for God cannot lie. And he is the eternal life , for Jesus alone conquered death and he has the gift of life eternal. God bless you all

You can pray directly to God, in fact, you should. Jesus came and died so that the barrier of sin that separated us from God could be broken, so that we could go directly into the Holy of Holies!
Be real, be honest, and be free to seek God with all of your heart, mind, body soul and strength. May God bless you as you learn to lay your head on the chest of your loving Father, and pour out your heart to Him! May you feel His loving arms embracing you, and comforting you.

Catholic Christians beleive that we need to confess our sins to a Priest. Christ bestowed his power to forgive sins to his Apostles which in turn passed on through Apostolic succession.
"Whose soever sins ye remit, they are remitted unto them; and whose soever sins ye retain, they are retained."

Exactly. And this is what Judaism teaches. In fact, in Judaism it is idolatry and forbidden to put anything in front of God to have to go through to get to God. The Jewish people did not go through their priests to get to God, either. That was not their function, contrary to what Christianity teaches about it.
Source: Torah, me, Jewish
P.S. Having to go through Jesus to get to God, is also idolatry for Judaism. No mediators allowed.
