Yesterday my boyfriend and I went to carphone warehouse to upgrade his phone. The guy that served us was really pushy and was rushing through everything and not giving us a chance to think. He convinced my boyfriend to start a new contract. He put the credit check through and he said it would take a while. Whilst we were waiting I realised that he hadn't asked for our address but the guy said there system was all up to date and he had photocopied my boyfriend driving licence as ID so we assumed he had checked the address. The credit check passed and my boyfriend was just about to sign the contract but realised it had his old address on. The guy said that's ok we'll just credit check you again on your new address! I told him not to and explained that every time he credit checked us he was lowering our credit score and he just credit checked my boyfriend on an address that he didn't live at so really that is fraud! We didn't let him credit check us again.

What should I do now?

Kenny, his driving licence has the correct address on it. It was the carphone warehouse that had his old address and didn't check the adress they had on there system against his driving licence

I should have also said that we had a problem before with our credit score because we got credit checked too much when we moved into our house. We couldn't get any credit for 6 months because of that reason. Every time you are credit checked it lowers your score.

You are correct in thinking that every time your credit is pulled, your score is lowered.
Since it's a bit too late and companies cannot "take back" an inquiry, the best thing would be to write whichever credit bureau the sales associate checked. Explain the situation and let them know that the second check was not authorized by you (well, your bf). All CRAs have a section on the report where you can put a personal statement. You can request to have your letter put there if the bureau is not willing to remove the second inquiry altogether.
Good luck!

1. You are the customer. If the employee who is supposed to be helping you is being rude, you certainly have the right to leave. If you want a chance to think, walk out the store or tell him you need a minute. It's really not that hard.

2. Your credit score does not drop with multiple inquiries in the situation that you're talking about here. Think about it.. Every time you receive one of those credit card deals in the mail, it's a result of your credit report being hit and qualifying you for a card.

3. Credit checking at a previous address is hardly fraud. Sounds like you just need to go to another store.

Perhaps you should have spoken with the manager at the store. The employee obviously wasn't doing his job properly - if you pointed out all these details to him and he still went on to credit check the wrong address and not tally up the info he was given, then he was not doing a professional job.

That shouldn't lower your score, that only happens when you don't pay bills and the people you owe money to register it with a credit agency. As long as you haven't had built up a bad history at your new address you will still get credit.

Your boyfriend technically committed a criminal offence. He should have changed his driving licence. That could have been anyone producing that licence.
