Along with the previous mentioned information about Global Positioning System and its number of satellites in constellation orbiting the earth, GPS utilizes the principles of "triangulation" to pinpoint where on the earth the GPS receiver is located. This is an important navigation principle required in position determination.
GPS replaces older navigation systems like NNSS (Navy Navigation Satellite System) and LORAN (Long Range Navigation). I've worked as a service technician for all 3 types of services, in years past.

The Global Positioning System (GPS) is the only fully functional Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS). Utilizing a constellation of at least 24 medium Earth orbit satellites that transmit precise microwave signals, the system enables a GPS receiver to determine its location, speed, direction, and time. Other similar systems are the Russian GLONASS (incomplete as of 2007) and the upcoming European Galileo positioning system.
