Good amateur cameras with about 5 mega pixel resolution and 3X optical zoom are available in a range of 5000 to 10000 rupees. Check out Cannon, Sony, Olympus, Kodak etc. I am assuming you are in India.

The best $100 compact digital camera that runs on rechargeable batteries (250 shots or more on AAs) , shoots excellent quality video with sound and has a wonderful review at Steve's Digital.com: it's the 6-megapixel Nikon Coolpix L11 currently selling at samys.com.

If you can afford to spend about $300 more, go with the Canon PowerShot S3 with the image stabilized 12X zoom.

Good luck!

Look at the Canon Powershot A-series. In my opinion the best in price/quality ratio is A630 model. If it's a little expensive, look at A550, A560 etc. For more details look at my article: "Choosing Digital Compact camera: Canon A650 vs A640, against A630"
