country's national anthem is played? For example. if everyone around you is doing it, you don't want to show disrespect, but is it wrong to do so since you're allegiance is not to that country?

The hand over the heart is considered a form of saluting the flag. (It's mainly a US civilian salute.)

It is inappropriate to salute another nation's flag. Standing up and showing proper respect, however, is perfectly acceptable:)

As far as I know, putting the hand over the heart is a gesture that we Americans do to show respect for the flag, not the anthem. (I think it's easy to mix up what to do for the flag and the anthem because we often see the flag and hear the anthem at the same time.) We are the only country I know of who shows respect to the flag like this. In Canada, for example, people don't put their hands over their hearts when they see the Canadian flag. So I wouldn't expect you to do it either.

Ever heard of the saying "When in Rome, do as the Romans do"? It's not actually disloyalty to one's country when an American, by showing his respect to his host country, puts his/her hand over his/her heart when that country's national anthem is played.

No. No one expects any non-native to treat every anthem the same. The American should stand quietly and respectfully, but never salute it the way he would the American anthem.

In England you just stand up. No hand gestures. Allegiance is to the Queen, not the flag.

You don't put your hand over your heart. You show respect by standing and remaining silent.
