Why are people who cut, aka emos always frowned upon in society? I suffer from depression and am trying to get help, but in my mind, cutting takes all the emotional pain; the depression, and makes it into something more concrete. To me, a simple cut makes me feel loads better. I guess you could label me as "emo" but I see nothing wrong with it. Why do people see being emo as wrong or unacceptable? Like I said, cutting is one of the most beneficial things I have ever done. Someone tell me why I shouldn't cut, if it makes me feel sooooo much better

NOTE: I have been cutting a bit less since starting on meds and therapy, but i still find a cut on the arm makes the world of difference. Not a fatal cut to the wrists...no.

i dont think your being emo is whats scaring peopl e its the self mutilation.ok you are depressed and yes cutting yourself makes it feel better but your just covering up the pain by cutting, your taking out your anger on yourself.its like a drugy or alcho.its only a temperary solution until you hurt again.and only you know what you need.you might just need to talk to someone hell you might just need to workout just find a more constructive way to let out all your aggression.your a living being you arent any different than anybody else you just need to let out your anger. you shouldnt be frownd apon.some people jus like to jump to conclusions about people they dont even know or understand for that matter.

Hello, I also suffer from severe depression. People who have never been truly depressed ( mean more than just being really sad) do not understand that there are things that you have no control over. Cutting ( also considered self-mutilation) is never a good habit to get into. It is not healthy and whenever you are better, you will regret the scars that it will leave. Hurting yourself is not a healthy way to realive your pain. There are many other ways that are less harmful to yourself. Seeking help is the first big step you can take and I would suggest getting counseling to learn ways that you can relieve your symptoms that is also healthy for your mind and body. This will also help with your relationships with people around you. From someone who understands.

Most people cannot understand how physical pain could make someone feel better. It's a foreign concept to anyone who hasn't experienced it and it's a sign of deeper issues that need to be dealt with.

"Emo" is a style of music and more recently a fashion style, it is not a mental state and not everyone who cuts is "emo", nor do all "emo" people cut. It's become this ridiculous fad somehow, which is just wrong.

Being "Emo" and "cutting self" is an addiction like taking drugs. There are ups and downs in everyone's life but not everyone goes into depression or resort to cutting. They face the world bravely and those mentally weak only resort to such actions.

Like drug addicts, such people also try to justify their actions, telling others that they won't know what depression is and it is clear from the many answers given here. If taking drugs cannot be justified so is being "Emo" and 'Cutting self".

If you are trying to get help, it shows that you know what you are doing is wrong, or at least it is not right. Then why justify your action?

Follow your counsellors' advice and join such groups for mutual support rather than lamenting on your depression.

Because when people aren't in that emotional state they just don't understand, they think its about getting attention. They think it's wrong because happy healthy people don't generally cut themselves and it seems pointless to them they think pain is bad.

some people are just ignorant and live in their "happy clouds". They have ever been in emotional pain and don't know how it can be helped by physical pain.
