some people say this is a myth, but this makes sense as some tumors become malignant for some reason at some point. So if biopsy shows the tumor is benign u will have to repeat this biopsy (every month? as some malignant cancers can kill within 3 months like thyroid anaplastic cancer) to make sure it did not get malignant yet - so what's the point in this procedure unless u actually have malignant cancer in the first place?

It is true that some benign tumors can become malignant. It is however very rare for that to happen. It is highly unlikely that a needle biopsy can cause a tumor to become malignant. Malignancy is caused by a mutation below the cellular level. Mutations are either genetic, chromosomal or caused by damage from chemicals, NOT damage from macro pressures. People do not get cancer from blunt force trauma or cuts, they get cancer from the cellular changes caused by radiation or smoking or...etc. A needle biopsy can show if a tumor is benign or malignant and is necessary to be repeated if your tumor is at risk for becoming malignant because early detection could save your life. Some people with non-cancerous tumors elect to have the affected part of their body removed anyway to be sure that the malignancy can never form (e.g. breasts, uterus, prostate). Another reason for repeat needle biopsies is that a needle can only reach one tiny point in the organ and there could be cancer elsewhere that the needle did not touch (e.g. liver). If a doctor has advised you to have a needle biopsy, please do it. It CANNOT cause you to develop cancer. Really.

There are at least two answers to this question:

1) If you think of the adage, "Not every slice of the apple goes through its core." Taking a small sample from a lesion might biopsy only normal tissue and not the cancer.

2) Some tumors are benign but undergo malignant transformation on occasion. Some neurofibromas do this. Adenomatous polyps of the colon are usually benign, but are considered pre-cancerous, because their nature is to become malignant.

Why do it in the first place? Sometimes the only other option is to do an excisional biopsy, that is, to remove the entire organ. You would hate to do that and find out afterward that it was normal or benign.

well, there are tumors that could respond to medications like hormone therapy. For exaple the needle biopsy shows benignity then you can give the hormones or medictions but when it is frankly malignant then you can remove it. This is done specially for breast cancer cases. actually benign tumors can undergo malignancy. But the conversion is dependent on a multifactorial basis.

Benign tumors typically are encapsulated, which inhibits their ability to behave in a malignant manner. Nonetheless, many types of benign tumors have the potential to become malignant and some types, such as teratoma, are notorious for this.
So if the tumor is not removed, it is necessary for some of them to be watched.

The answer seems too obvious.
No biopsy no diagnosis.
The earlier the diagnosis the better the chances of successful treatment.
Not all cancers kill in three months, some take years, hence annual scans for breast cancer, unless you are in the 10% who have are prone to cancer being triggered by the scan itself. There is a pre-test for this condition.
