I was very fortunate indeed. I had a first grade teacher who was also an accomplished artist.
Each morning when we came to class, she had a sketch drawn on the blackboard with colored chalk. Our first assignment of the day was to draw that sketch and turn it in to her. This inspired me very much, but I spent a lot of time drawing in class as opposed to learning arithmetic. It caught up with me one day as the teacher was explaining subtraction as opposed to addition....lol....!
My grandmother was also an inspiration to me. Although she was not an accomplished artist, she would draw things for me anytime I asked her for help.
I went into college with absoulutely no background in art at all, except the two that I have described above. College was not a great help, but determination was the biggest help of all. I believe that some people are born with a great artistic ability. However, I also am convinced that if we want something bad enough....it will happen for us if we are determined and just keep trying. Good Luck and God bless.

My earliest and fondest memories are of drawing and painting. Both were self- directed and JOYFUL! AS a tiny tot I remember sitting on the floor with fat pencil and a Big Chief pad, then my first exprience with paints was in 1st grade, I can still see the glistening wet paint tubs and smell the tempra, I almost felt the colors!!

I had been drawing since I was a child...self taught...so i went to art school because that was the only thing I really liked to do. Turns out, i wasn't bad at it, developed painting skills... none of my schools ever had art classes or departments though til college, so I kinda jumped in with both feet.

YES !
I was the child of an artist. My earliest memories are of sitting at my Mother's feet watching her paint.
I drew the best mice and mouse holes in grade 1 at school (that's ALL I drew in grade 1)
I grew up on the smell of oil paint , linseed oil and turpentine (which might explain a few things!)
I began painting in oils at age 8.
My children have grown up the same way, but none of them have an interest in painting.

As a child i was always asking for and my mom always bought me coloring books and colors. Then came drawing and eventually painting. I am a self taught artist and my work can be checked out at hellosanantonio.com under artist name ''Guerro'' in the local artist section.
