NYC is of course such a dynamic place that few places stand up to it. NYC's suburbs are rather lame, in my opinion, but then most suburbs are.

Albany has a great student scene, young professional scene, music and clubs, and arts/ethnic communities/restaurants/etc. It has a number of summer festivals and music events as well.
If one grows out of the student scene and is looking for more of an arts-oriented community, Troy, a city of 50K, is a nearby arts center, and Hudson (under 10K) is a nice small-town arts center, both of which also have nightlife, festivals, etc.

The worst traffic is beterrn Albany and Saratoga, the most suburban area. Anywhere else is fairly tame compared to most metro areas.

Anywhere in the Albany area, you can be in the countryside within 1/2 hour. The Adirondack mountians are just to the north, the Catskills are equidistant (if not closer) though they remain off most Albanians' radars, and both the Hudson Valley to the south and western New England to the east offers a different blend of culture in addition to what one finds in Albany. Albany malls do offer all the usual chains and big boxes, but have lots of local/indy specialty stores and restaurants as well.

If you're young and can afford to live the NYC life, that is of course unduplcatable anywhere. But if you want something more laid back but still cultural, and close to natural activities, the Albany area is better suited.

i lived in albany for 1 year of college...very different compared to nyc ...albany is a good college scene but after age 25 might grow old..its a hell of alot cheaper than ny for sure but you lose all that nyc has to offer(nightlife, entertainment, etc)...albany has its perks though--its close to the adirondacks if you're into that, many major cities are within close driving distance(ny, boston, montreal), speaking of driving ytou can own a car in albany very easily compared to ny....i just read a poll recently that ranked albany as the most boring city to live in but thats all relative....check out the website called sperling's best places--alot of people post on it
