my, fiancee is in Pennsylvania, and the minister was in North Carolina, we only had one witness-who was in Cali-the marriage certificate was filled out but later destroyed-and neither of us applied for a marriage license in our states-is the marriage still legal?

Hey I'm in WA!

That is not legal! You HAVE to apply for the marriage license (it takes 3-4 days), and you have to have 2 witnesses.

It is hard to judge the legality of this. Usually in the united states you need to have a marriage license. The total legality of this situation is confused because of the multiple jurisdictions.

There is no specific problem because you can get married again without any problem and completely legalise it.

I would suggest that the with official registration you marriage will not get automatic legal recognition. So for things such as legitimisation of children, property and inheritance rights, would require a costly legal battle.

If you feel worried about it, you can try and get the marriage annulled so that it defintely has no legal status.

Love and the law and not always compatible, though the law does its best to understand law.

No. If you did not have a marriage license, which is the legal document that needs to be signed by you, your groom, 2 witnesses, and the officiant and then filed in the court, it IS NOT legal.

You need a MARRIAGE LICENSE to make it legal.
