God tells us to Love him with all our hearts, and to have no other Gods before him. It is okay to Love people. It is NOT ok to worship them or put them Higher than him. That would make them an Idol. The Bible does say he is a Jealous God.

Hmm. Jealousy is a pretty negetive emotion, you'd think God would be above such things. Maybe it's not jealousy as much as it is concern.

Given: Love is one of the biggest motivators in human psychology.
Given: The primary result of religious instruction is intended to be strong moral behavior.
Theory: Love for the wrong person/object/idea can lead to some really poor decision making.
Hypothosis: Loving God above all else lends us a greater motivation to obey those moral constructs put in place by the religious institution we follow, thus protecting us from the poor decisions we could otherwise make.

Or in other words - God wants us to love him first because that helps keep us from making some really stupid mistakes in the name of "love".

I should go look up that verse in Exodus, I bet you "I am a JEALOUS God..." is a poor translation.

:edit:
"Meaning and Derivation: Qanna is translated as "jealous," "zealous," or "envy." The fundamental meaning relates to a marriage relationship. God is depicted as Israel's husband.."

In a marriage relationshp certain vows are made, God would expect (and rightfully so) that Israel would live up to and obey those vows. Israel running off and "cheating" on God would probably arouse some strong emotion, although the modern definition of "jealousy" probably wouldn't quite fit altogether.

YES, he is a jealous GOD. He created you, me, everyone and everything else. We were created to worship him, not this world and its trappings:i.e.;other gods, other people, material goods and wealth. However, GOD is a gentleman, he gives us the choice. Personally, the more I love GOD and surrender my will to his, the better all my relationships have gotten. This includes my understanding of self, others and finding serenity.

First two of the Ten Commandments:

You shall have no other gods before Me.

You shall not make for yourself a carved image-any likeness of anything that is in heaven above or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth; you shall not bow down to them nor serve them. For I, the LORD your GOD, am a jealous GOD, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children to the third and fourth generations of those who hate Me, but showing mercy to thousands, to those who love Me and keep My commandments.

Yes . It is written that anyone that loves their mother, father , etc, etc more than God is not worthy of God. And God puts a curse on people all the way down to the fourth generation if they continue to worship other gods. That should answer your question adequately . TOOBEROOT is right. It is written that God chastises those whom He loves. So if you are doing things that God doesn't like and are NOT being chastised by Him for it , you are in deep deep trouble.

If He gets jealous of your affection towards another person or thing then you are the luckiest man alive. I'm speaking from experience.

The person who is having the best time in their life, who does not have a care in the world; who does not even have the slightest thought towards God is the most cursed person on the face of the Earth.

Such a person had better enjoy them self for the hundred or so years of their life because it will end not too nicely.

I am one of the luckiest men on Earth because God won't let me stray too far before I feel like the air has been sucked out of my lungs. I will not be having the happiest life in the world, but I will later.

That is what He said.
Using the word 'jealous' is not the same emotion as jealous is to a human. He tells us to love everyone. What He is saying is that He wants to be most important in our lives. If we think about it, no one can do what He can do for us.

Yeah, I think so. Bible says that God is a jealous God. I love no one on this Earth more than I love God; not my child, not my hubby-- no one. If you are a believer, God has a tendency to take things away from you that you love more than Him.

i don't know , maybe , HE or SHE , would be jealous to SHE or HE , whom , had taken THE SHE OR HE LOVE. EDITED : that is why the MUSLIM had bowed themself to THE SON OF THE SUN for five times a day AS TO SHOWING THEM LOVES TO THE GOD. That's all was a parts of abouts not to make THE GOD to get angry or jealous toward them.

Yes He really is.
Who do you suppose gave life and breath to those other people?
Who do you suppose gave life and breath to you?
If God is God, then anything less than first place is an insult. Whatever holds first place in your life is your god.
