Do you mean at what age should you get a kitten or what age should the kitten be?
I think, if it is the kitten, it is at about six weeks of age, or when it is old enough to leave the mother and doesn't need to suckle any longer.
You could ask in a pet store, if someone is giving you the kitten from somewhere else.
You should get a kitten only when you are able to make a commitment to look after it for life. Have fun with the new kitten!

Usually kittens are weaned and using the litterbox reliably at 8 to 10 weeks, but since they need a certain amount of time with their momma in order to be a confident cat, I'd say 12 weeks. This is the age we recommend, but certain kittens are weaned and quite confident at 8 weeks and ready to be on their own. By that age they're not sleeping as much, either, so you can tell they're good to go.
If you're considering a kitten for show, I'd say 16 weeks because by that age their color is usually well developed as is their personality. If you're buying a kitten as a show cat, I'd be wary if it hasn't won a ribbon yet. They can go to cat shows at 16 weeks, but it isn't a "show" cat unless it has won a ribbon.

Please do not take a kitten away from its mother until it is at LEAST 10 weeks old.
Many years ago it was considered OK to give kittens away as young as 6-8 weeks but since then we have learned that this is too young. Studies have shown that kittens left with their mothers for at least 10 weeks have far fewer emotional problems.
Unfortunately, it's very, very hard to get the word out about this. Kittens are at their very CUTEST at 6 weeks old and so most people want to adopt them at that age. But it's NOT good for the kittens!

In most states (in the USA) now require a kitten to have all of their shots and can only be given away once they are 8 weeks old. Some breeders are now even waiting until 12 weeks to give kittens away to make sure they are developing properly and are healthy. 8 weeks is what most people get their kittens at though, but if you really want to be on the safe side, 12 weeks. I got mine at 8 weeks however :) She is now 5 months old and doing wonderfully.

if you don't mind really rambunctious kittens, 3 months is a good age. that's when they're playful and curious, but probably litter-box trained by then, by whoever you get them from.
but kittens have a LOT of energy. my kittens run around all night. you have to have patience to get through that stage. but they're very fun to play with.

10-12 wks is better, they have a longer time to get mom's milk with the needed nutrition and antibodies which help them to develop into healthy adults.
