If you have treated him ( remember to boil his clothes and pillow cover too ), you can send him to school. He probably got them there in the first place.

I would make sure that they are all gone.A couple of years ago the head lice were getting immune to the medication in the shampoos. You could hardly get rid of them.Make sure you wash everything in hot water and dry in a hot dryer.Put any stuff toys in trash bags out of the house for several weeks also.Wash all the brushes and combs in real hot water and let them soak .Use a nit comb too.At Wal-mart they even have a comb that's a called a Robbi comb It runs on batteries. It actually shocks and kills any lice you have missed. It doesn't hurt you.You are suppose to use the shampoo and them repeat it in a certain amount of time in case any more eggs hatch that you may have missed.Wash all bedclothes, his coat, hat etc.Put his pillow in the dryer if you can't wash it for about 30 minutes on hot.I would vacuum the mattress, furniture etc.Even your car if its cloth interior. If his hair is long I would cut it short.I would notify the school so they can do a head check in the class room.He probably caught them from another kid and if everyone isn't treated that has them they will just keep passing them back and forth and before you know it ,it will spread a lot further.

The treatment you used should have said something about the effectiveness of it.. for example "Treat and treat again in 2-3 days" or something like that.

The reason being, that some of the eggs may have survived the treatment and "hatched" and now they're alive and need to be treated too.

Lice cannot withstand a HOT environment. Use a blow dryer on your son for a few minutes, a couple times a day. AND WASH all the bedding - otherwise the lice will just come back.

If your box didn't say, ask the school.

You should first call the school office and inform them that your son has headlice, but has been treated for it. Next before sending him to school you should to an entire scalp check and make sure your son has no traces of lice found on his head. If you find a trace of lice, re treat him and check again. Send him to school once you are sure he does not have lice.

Nope. You can not send a child back to school until they have been fully treated and all bugs and eggs (nits) have been removed. You also must check daily for the next week because they can come back, especially if you haven't treated his pillows, sheets and blankets...these should be washed in very hot water...Once you do send him back to school, the nurse will also check his head and she'll determine if the lice is gone. If it comes down to it, you could just shave his head, since you got a boy. Good Luck.

Lice ...

some people will tell you that they will NOT survive off the human head any longer than 24 hours ......

I am here to tell you .. that that is a crock.....

years ago my daughter picked up lice from school ... we didn't want to create a stigma ..
(remembering that Lice actually prefer clean hair but some people get so mean, nasty and cruel to pooer kids who get lice) .. .so we set out to make it an *educational procedure*.

we got one of the little buggars and stuck it with clear tape to a micro-scope slide .... and we put in under the micro-scope and we watched it .....He was alive and kicking .. his little legs waving about and the blood ( my daughter's bood) flowing though his little body ......
we watched him for 12 hours
we watched him for 24 hours
we watched him for 36 hours ..

this is on a micro-scope slide .. WITHOUT nourishment
we watched him nearly into the 4th day ...

was VERY interesting

I wouldn't send him to school unless you can make sure all the eggs have also been removed.

call the school and find out the policy on lice
besides that's probably where he got it in the first place so you'll need to let the school know so they can check everybody and clean everything thoroughly

i remember when i was in school you were required to be out at least a week after treatment and then after that treatment you still had to be checked and cleared by either a family doctor or the school nurse

You should call the school and inform them that your son had lice. There are probably other children and possibly furniture at the school that have it too. I'm guessing that's where your son got it.

Let the school know that you found lice and treated it and ask them to check him before he goes to his first class so they know it is ok.
