I'm just wondering why "om" is a helpful mantra for meditation or worship. Is it a special word, with spiritual power? Please explain.

Jana, if I feel the Holy Spirit when I do it or when I read about it (which I do), doesn't that make it a spiritual thing, from God, since the Holy Ghost is sent to testify of ALL truth?

As an energy therapist (homeopath), married to another energy therapist (crystal therapist), I can tell you that sound and light do have energetic signatures that influence the human body, mind and spirit for better or for worse.

Invoking evil is easily done through disobedience to divine law, through fear/lack of faith (a personal attribute), and through naming & giving credence to negative forces. I prefer to see the good in everything & everyone, as this brings more power & glory to our Creator. He guides all of his children, via their hearts, through his Holy Spirit (the Hindu's call this "God within").

We are really not so different... It is just the words. We share many truths in common. I rejoice in those truths, & in the inner voice of the Holy Spirit of God that enables my freedom.

Everything in this world is created from sound with the help of light. What you see today is all from sound. That sound is called universal sound. It is the sound which is generated when pronounce Aum.

Let is see how everything in this world is created by sound.

When square of light hits the mass, mass disappears and releases energy. We see it as formula and forget it. But what we don’t understand is that every solid particle in this world can disappear releasing energy. Imagine even earth can disappear releasing energy.

Energy can be stored or used effectively. Using the same energy we have the formula for work done

When energy is used in the form force on an object, that object moves from point a to point b. We say work is done and energy is used.

But as per Sir Isaac Newton,

“Energy can neither be created nor destroyed but can change from one form to another form”

After work is done, if the object is place over another, it would release Heat energy due to friction. But assuming that it is not colliding with any other object, it released sound.

Definition of sound says :

Any sound we hear for sometime and then disappears. Humans perceive sound by the sense of hearing with some frequency only.

Likewise sound energy released during work done is heard for sometime and then it is gone. Where this sound goes. Actually the sound merges with the universal sound which we don’t hear.

It is the same sound with the same formula converts Sound to Mass with the same square of light speed.

This completes the whole cycle. So you can say that everything in this world is crated from sound with the help of light.

That sound is aumkara / omkara.
-----------------------------------------
Albert Einstein's equation E = m c2.
E : Total energy released, M : Mass, c2 : Square of light

Work done formula:
W = Fs
W= Work done F = Force s =object is moved through a distance.
----------------------------------------

aumkara / omkara has 3 diviions

A - akara
U - ukara
M - makara
……. : Amaatra

You enchant this mantra with chin mudra.

A - akara Small finger (to over come awakening stage)
U - ukara Ring finger (to over come dreaming stage)
M - makara Middle Finger (to over come deep sleep stage)
……. : Amaatra Fore finger (representing Jeevathma)
Thumb (representing paramathma)

Joining for finger and thumb finger is the amaatra “mmm……”

There is the sounding of the vowels in such a manner that they are aroused to the physical body the associations of the centers through which there is the connection of the spiritual forces. In all of your meditation, Ohm-O-h-m-mmmmm raises self to the highest influence and the highest vibrations throughout the whole being that may be experienced. As you begin with the incantation of OM raise these in yourself and you become close in the presence of your Maker as shown in yourself. They that do such for selfish motives do so to their own undoing. Do so for spiritual power, or a mantra for worship to bring Harmony and will awaken within self the abilities of drawing that love of the Father as shown to the children of men.

Om (Aum) is a Brahman sacred symbol in Hinduism representing the Absolute, an entity which is omnipotent, omnipresent, and the source of all existence. It's supposed to be an idea (and being) beyond comprehension. It's also believed to be the basic sound of the world and to contain all other sounds. So, when you utter it, it's supposed to resonate within your soul.

That being the case it would make sense why it would be a good focus for meditation.

OM is everything. It is Krishna. It is the sound vibration that comes from Lord Krishna's transcendental flute. It it the sound Lord Krishna make at the time of creation to give all wisdom to His servant lord Brahma who is the co creator who created all material bodies etc. under the guidance of Lord Krishna. (Brahma is not God) Om is chanted before most prayers and verses in the Vedas. Many people chant Om for self realization. But it is not the recommended mantra (for japa) in this age. Because it will take one many many lifetimes to attain self realization this way. In this age the process for self realization is to Chant the name of God named above. most especially the Maha Mantra (all pure mantras are within the Maha Mantra and they are 3 names of God. Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare
So if one chants this mantra before anything they do all will be purified. Gods name is supremely powerful than any material or spiritual sound because it is God Himself. When one chants His name He is immediately present.
If you like write me for a direct link on wonderful description of this mantra and om and other mantras. also go to harekrishnatemple.com for info. Hope this helps.

Aum is a very mysterious sound... aum is normally atached with hinduism/buddhism, but this sound is beyond all the boundaries of religions and beliefs.

you will be surprised, aum is not a Sanskrit word or any other language's word..... i would say it is not a word at all.

Aum the the humming of the cosmic divine motor of creation and destruction

Tantra philosophy says, when Shiva (pure consciousness) and Shakti (eternal energy) mate ...the sound of Aumm is generated.

This Aum sound further disintegrate into all the possible syllables, then mantras and finally gross matter.

Aum is thus the highest vibrational sound of the Cosmic Shakti who is busy in creation/destruction with the help of this sound

If we meditate on the sound of Aum... particularly the humming and finally the silence following the humming... we can reach the sourse... the eternal Energy (shakti)...who will take us to Shiva, the pure consciousness

=========================================

Addl:info : AUM has Four sounds... A-U-M-SILENCE

A= material world, waking state

U = Astral world, dream state

M= Causal world, deep sleep

..= beyond the cosmos... pure bliss.

Uttering a word, chanting or any other mental ritual not focused as we are instructed to pray is..for the most part, a waste of time. There is no real power in the religious practices of pagan idol worship...what it does though is leave you mentally open to be decieved into believing otherwise...such as with the self deluding practice of witchcraft, meddling with such influences as ouija boards and tarot cards and etc. There is just enough to it...that one might be able to inspire the slight thrill of being a witness to something that "appears" profound..."appears" to have substance or "seems" to give energy or meaning or even perhaps a certain level of understanding...however, if it is not of God then it is of Satan. Whatever might be felt, seen, heard or experience will be glitter only and never the gold. Only God can and will provide that for us. Physiologically, any repitition of any certain type of rythmic chanting or movement can be what is called "self soothing" or stemming behavior...children do it when not rocked enough or experience stress...the vibration is comforting..like rocking in a rocking chair and etc. So if you sit comfortably somewhere, close your eyes and allow your vocal cords to reverberate the hummmmm of this sound...you will begin to possibly feel relaxed, seduced into a false sense of mental and physical tranquility and so forth. However, sitting idle in a practice which is commonly used to call upon "spirits" no matter how benign we believe them to be is a dangerous thing. Not all demonic possession is of the Excorsist/Linda Blair variety. To be possessed or even persuaded by a demon could mean something so subtle as to loose interest in the things of God that keep you near to Him in worship and in thought. You might not see the change right away...it could open doors for you to be curious in other occultic or cultic/pagan religious practices. Just like Christians who teach Yoga or martial arts...there is a fine line between studying an artform and beginning to adhere to the religious practices and beliefs that coincide with that artform. God tells us not to pay heed or to give any kind of acknowledgement to false gods...to even abstain from the appearance of evil. Shun it. Its a deception to believe that you could gain energetic spiritual power from uttering a word when the Bible tells that the One True Spirit is the Holy Spirit. If you desire to have a blessing then seek that blessing from Him. Love in Christ, ~J~

The corrosion guy got it right, simplified it means God since we in the west don't usually view God in the same way as the east, so it's a loose translation and I fully endorse meditation. There's so much more inside of us than our minds lets us see.

Yes, in its Sanskrit pronuciation of Ah-oo-mm it means "Creator, Sustainer, Destroyer". Something of a trinity, I suppose.

Explained to me at a science conference by a Hindu scientist.
