Well it depends on what you need. First and foremost you would want a 60 gig ps3 if your son is intending to play ps1 and 2 game then you would want the 60 gig. The 40 gig ps3 however will not play your ps1 and 2 games. So first go with your son needs. Another thing to consider is your son plan on saving music pictures, maybe download some demos online. There are a good amount of thing you can do with your ps3. For example I have my son pictures on my ps3 and send them to friend and family (online). There memory space to consider and the decision to play your ps1 and 2 games. I don't use my 60 gig ps3 for ps2 games but i bought my ps3 when it was just released. :D if you have any other question feel free to contact me.

Sony have discontinued production of the 60GB PlayStation 3. They issued a statement that it's due to "consumer feedback", but the fact that they make slightly more profit on the new 40GB model may be the actual reason. So, the 60GB has quickly become rarer than a Nintendo Wii. The PS3 40GB obviously has less storage, but the main thing you lose is the ability to play PlayStation 2 games. If you're lucky you may find a store somewhere that hasn't sold all the 60GBs yet - otherwise the 40GB is the only option in the UK for now

So summarising.
only the 40GB and 60GB are legit for the UK. others are US consoles that you'd have to source from Ebay & I'm unsure about warranty etc. The 60GB one was better but is being phased out and replaced with the cheaper 40GB one.
Therefore:
1. I'd recommend that you stick to UK PS3's (You are in the UK right?)
2. If your son has a load of PS2 games, we'd definitely recommend that you hunt for a 60GB.
3. If your son has no PS2 games, then the 40GB one will be fine, unless you're planning to heavily use the missing features like the memory card slots.

The latest console is the 40GB PS3, but there's a downside because the 40GB PS3 cannot play PS2 games.
The 60GB PS3 can play nearly all PS1 and PS2 games. Also, in my opinion the 60GB PS3 is the most desired PS3 console because it has the best backwards compatibility with PS1 and PS2 games, and because it has all of the features just like the 80GB PS3. The 80GB PS3 can play both PS1 and PS2 games, it just can't play as many as the 60GB PS3.
The 60GB PS3's have been discontinued, so I highly recommend buying one because like a said, the 60GB model is highly desired out of all of the PS3 consoles.
The 40GB PS3 has all of the features that the 60GB PS3 has except that it only has 2 USB ports, it doesn't play PS2 games, and it doest have the digital camera flash card slots and that's it.
You should get the 60GB PS3 without a doubt.

It really depends what you are looking for..the 60 gig has more space on the hard drive and more features, like playing ps2 games and more slots too..and to the person that said to buy an xbox 360,please read up about it`s overheating problems.the xbox red ring of death(check that out online) the ps3 is the future of games and movies..atleast for the next 10 years.. whatever ps3 you decide on you will have a good system..please enjoy the new world of ps3

The better console is the 60GB because it can play all PS2 games, the 40GB PS3 can NOT play PS2 games.
Also, the 60GB PS3 isn't being made anymore (but you can get them online), so if you can't get a 60GB PS3 the next best is the 80GB PS3 because it plays most PS2 games.

This question is an often one, so that's my cut & paste answer:
1). 20GB has no chrome trim, no memory card reader and no wi-fi. Not manufactured anymore. Has the best backwards compatibility with PS2 games due to Emotion Engine (PS2's CPU) and Graphics Synthesizer (PS2's GPU) installed.
2). NTSC 60GB has the same backwards compatibility as 20GB version, also has memory card reader and wi-fi. Has a chrome trim.
3). 80GB - extended memory, but reduced backwards compatibility with PS2 games, it has only Graphics Synthesizer (PS2's GPU). Around 80% of PS2 games can be played. Available only in NTSC regions.
4). 40GB - can't play PS2 games at all (all PS2 chips were removed), has 2 USBs instead of 4, no memory card reader, has wi-fi. Avalable in black and white colors. White is on sale only in Japan. Uses 65nm technology (lower power consumption). Improved cooling system. It's the latest version.
5). PAL 60GB - reduced backwards compatibility with PS2 games. it has only Graphics Synthesizer (PS2's GPU). Around 80% of PS2 games can be played.
