I just got a Playstation 3 today and love it. The problem is, I put it on a shelf covered on the sides and back. The PS3 is exposed in the front to room temp and has some space to breathe on the side. I left it on from 6PM to 11PM today to download demos and despite hearing that the PS3 doesnt get too hot, the PS3 was actually warmer than the 360 has ever gotten for me.

I was wondering, could my PS3 overheat in there and should I keep it out in the open, should I keep it where it is, or should I get an intercooler for it if I plan on keeping it where it is? I have heard that those are just a waste of money though.

Keep it on an open shelf. The back could be preventing air from circulating to keep the PS3 cool.

Well everyone already gave you the best advice as far as what to do. You need to put it either on a shelf alone and which it allows the console to release the hot air. Where you have it now the heat is leaving the console, however it isn't escaping so it returning to the console. A intercooler will not help your console the only thing that does is actually make the console work a little harder and if your ps3 overheats....well sony will not fix your console because using a intercooler violates the sony warranty. If you have a coffee table or a top shelf place it there and let the hot air release. I have kept my console on for more hours than that and I never have had any type of problems with my console overheating. Good luck:D

The PS3 can overheat, but it is built better than the 360 so it can get hotter without dying. I recommend you put it in a more open space, as repeated exposure to high temperature could eventually do damage. You can leave it in an open shelf, just make sure it has plenty of room on each side.

An intercooler is a waste of money, in my opinion, since the PS3 is perfectly capable of cooling itself as long as its taken care of.

Like Superdork and ShadowFyre said, you need to keep the PS3 out in the open. You shouldn't put the PS3 in electronic gaming shelf or something like that, it needs to be out in the open and the PS3 needs room to breathe on all sides of the console.

But, as you can see, the PS3 is a very reliable console, but you should keep in out in the open.

Keep your Playstation 3 in the open, not in an enclosed place. The PS3 has a .02% failure rate, the xbox 360 has a 33% failure rate. Also, DO NOT buy an intercooler, they will void your warranty and will block the airflow of the PS3's built in cooling system.

PS3 must have at least 10cm from walls. Mine stands in the same shelf. I had to drill a lot of holes in the back side of the shelf. My PS3 gets warm (they all do), it was running for more, than 16 hours in a row.

the two circulate purchase an intercooler or....if its interior of its guarantee and additionally you havent broken the guaranty tape, purely deliver it back and sony will fix it for loose. yet...it relies upon the place that's once you utilize it... initially dont have the PS3 stood against a wall with its back against it. Dont have it on carpet because of the fact the fibres get sucked in by using the cooler fan. purely save cleansing it by using working a vacuum cleanser over the back of the console so the airborne dirt and dust gets sucked up. and dont have enormous stints on it, have like 4 hrs max on it thn take 15 minute ruin, then you definately can circulate on it back for yet another 4 hrs. Please look after the 60GB PS3-- they seem to be a uncommon breed. :/

Leave it out in the open because it needs space in which to breath, never inside an entertainment centre. Dont buy an intercooler becuase it will void your warranty becuase its not recognised by sony as an official product.
