The issue is less about cruelty and more about choice. In arab societies women do not have the luxury of choosing how to live. For example if a woman wants to live and work alone & not marry, law as well as society will pressurise her into conforming to what is considered to be the ideal for woman in that society. Generally arab women are financially dependant on their husbands as most of them are married off by their fathers at a very early age & hence do not have the education, skills & confidence to work independently. This further diminishes their choices. Hence if they are unlucky enough to be married off to a cruel husband then there is not much they can do. Sure, divorce is an option, but the meher amount is not enough to see them through life. So the only option for the woman is to either marry again or depend on the mercy of their parents & relatives. Again in arab societies, women are considered as the bearers of the family "honour" This "honour" is first and foremost related to the chastity of the woman. So a woman who has an affair runs a risk of serious punishment & death. This "honour" concept however does not apply to the men. These are typical of extremely matriarchal societies. And to the writer above me- if western society is so rotten then why do so many arabs keep on trying their best to come to western countries. Edit- you cannot take out specifics of a culture & hold it as a judgement of the whole culture. So western culture (as indeed any culture) is to be seen in a holistic manner. This includes the technological advances as also what you consider as "cheap sex". What is cheap in one culture need not be so in another culture. So do not jump to judge a culture from your perspective. Obviously arabs find the european culture on the whole better than arab culture & hence they try to move here. Edit2-First of all you should not change your post. Its better that you put it up as edit2 like I have done. You are right in that western society (esp. USA) is heavily individualistic. The advantage of such a system is that individual excellence is rewarded & appreciated. The resultant progress is for all to see. The flip side is the loneliness & societal problems. However in many european countries & australia family bonds are quite strong. Go to a school function there & you will see parents of children alongwith their grandparents also! As regards alcoholism & homosexuality i personally do not see anything wrong with it as long as the persons are adults. If you take the argument that alcoholism has the potential to harm a person, well so does driving!. If something has a genetic fact should one reject it? A person's nature is to a large extent determined by his genes & many diseases are inherited (genetic) in nature. Would you reject stem cell therapy (if you ever need it) as it is again a genetic cure? So as I said, one cannot be selectively selective. REg incest, it is at the same level in the west as in everywhere ese in the world. The only difference is that in the west 80% of the cases are reported and make it to the papers while in arab society maybe only 1% of the cases are reported. This is because no girl woud have the courage to do so & doing it would forever spoil her chances of marriage. The arab society is one of the most hypocritical. Just check out the number of artificial hymens opertions performed there to "revirginise" their women.

I don't know about insecure, but I think Muslim men have their egos boosted by what they are allowed to do and what women cannot and they show their superiority, and I think the religion of Islam take the sexisim to far...men are allowed to do certain things, and women are not...for example, a Muslim man can marry a woman outside of his faith, so long as she is either Jewish or Christian. But a woman MUST marry a Muslim. She is not permitted to marry outside the Muslim religion. My husband is a Pakistani Muslim...I am not...so we have much conflict. I am not restricted or oppressed in any way, he's a good guy, but we have our differences and the most fly around religion.

Any man who beats their wives are mentally unstable. Beating wives in Islam is not standard. Is it standard for Christians? For Atheists? If you studied the religion of Islam, what exactly is the "beating" that they refer to? How is it taken out? And exactly when should you do that? Men who physically abuse their wives are definately phsycologically ill. The real Islam doesn't encourage this abusive behavior. To the contrary, Islam does protect their women and I suggest that you look at this website for your own knowledge.

Not necessarily. Many men still follow this standards because of tradition and religion. Although it may also have to do with insecurity because they don't want to be seen as "weak" by other men in the community. Also its against the law if women do otherwise. They may even be stoned to death.

They are a little afraid of what might happen if there was equality, but mostly it's a long-ingrained cultural problem. They've been taught for ages that it should be that way... even the women believe men are superior in many cases.
