a good rear naked choke or triangle, if done well, will cause unconsciousness by lack of blood supply to the brain in a few seconds (someone might wanna clarify how many) .
People usually tap out before they pass out, if they don't well... the ref can tell you to let go or if you realise yourself you let go. If you hold on for too long the brain can start getting permanent damage from blood oxygen deprivation, the longer you hold the more likely it is to brain damage them or die.

The term Chocked out is actually a mis conception. When they choke you out what they really do is block blood flow and oxygen to the brain rather than air and oxygen to the lungs. Next time you watch wrestling and you see one of the wrestlers do a choke hold keep an eye they are leaving an open space in front of the neck by the Adams apple but put pressure on the artery on the side of the neck. Now keep in mind that if you keep the pressure long enough not only will the person pass out you could actually kill the because of the loss of blood flow to the brain. Again it takes longer to kill than to Knock you out this way. My daughters godfather was put out this was several years ago and the offending party payed a hefty price for not stopping when he tapped out.

as stated, if a choke (blood, wind or both) is applied long enough- it can cause someone to passout... then if held to long it can cause brain damage----and if longer than that, death.
whats important to remember is that there is no set numbers on how long it takes for this to happen. everyones body style is different, and one cant judge on a "how many seconds" they held the choke to determine if it has been to long.
this is what makes chokes so dangerous. its a loaded weapon we hand to our students each day- which is why it is only taught to those who wont abuse the technique... and understands the delicate nature of the technique.

The "choke" is not cutting oxygen to the brain as many people believe. It is increasing the blood pressure and it tricks the brain into passing out in hopes of resetting the blood pressure.
When a person is choked their is enough blood going to the brain in the rest of the neck area to supply ample oxygen.

nowadays when people think choke they think strangling someone to death or something. in MMA when you choke someone out all your doing is slowing down the blood to your brain making you unconscious if you held it any longer it might cause brain damage. any longer than THAT death

Because the ones doing the choking stop short of choking the other guy dead and only renders him unconcious. Hence the term "choked out" instead of "choked dead" : P

because you automatically start breathing after you pass out it is just the way the body works you dont have to tell yourself to breath it just knows to do it.But if you keep the choke on after they are knocked out then yes you could die
