Having a seizure disorder, also known as epilepsy, usually does not affect your life expectancy. The problem is that many people with epilepsy have seizures that make them loss control of their bodies and become unconscious suddenly. Obviously, this can be very dangerous if the person is doing something like driving or swimming! Deaths do occur sometimes not because of the seizure itself, but because of an accident that occurs due to the seizure.

Also, people with epilepsy may go into what's called status epilepticus - it's a very prolonged seizure or having multiple seizures without regaining consciousness. Status epilepticus, even in people who have seizures regularly, is a medical emergency because it can cause irreversible brain damage and even death.

There is also a condition called sudden unexplained death in epilepsy (SUDEP). It's very rare, but it can occur, especially in people with poorly controlled epilepsy.

Seizures can be dangerous to a mother and child. If a woman with epilepsy wants to get pregnant she should very carefully plan her pregnancy with her doctor because seizures and the medications she takes for seizures can affect the baby.

Not everyone who has a seizure has a seizure disorder/epilepsy. If someone who does not normally have seizures has a seizure, it is a medical emergency. Seizures can be a sign of very serious medical problems or injuries.
