Writing a check when you don't have enough funds in your account is called kiting, and is illegal.

But from a more practical standpoint, even if you have money coming in, you don't know for sure when the money will be available - some banks can take over 2 business days to process deposits. So when you kite a check, you're risking bouncing the check or paying an overdraft penalty.

It's better to wait for the funds to clear and make the payment electronically.

Most places run checks electronically now. It keeps them from having to deal with bounced checks. There are a few retailers that take checks without running them, but the majority of them clear it right then.

But frankly, if you don't have the money, you shouldn't be spending it!!

No, but you can pay by credit card and not have to write a check for several weeks.
