The Greek is ambiguous. It could arguably be translated "was a god", but the more natural rendering is "was god", but because of the "anarthrous" (without an article) use of the word, there is a specific contrast between the first reference to God - who in the Greek is literally "The God" (In the beginning = at the time of the beginning, the Word was (in a continual state of existence) with = in intimate relationship with "The God" (ho theos); and the Word was ...theos) - and the second, which refers to the Word as "god", with a meaning somewhere between "God" and "Divine in nature".
All ambiguity is dismissed however in the following passage which plainly states "All things were made by (or through, really doesn't matter if you follow my train of thought) Him (that is, the Word); and apart from Him was nothing made of all that has been made." Thus the Word is distinguished from all creating things and plainly set forth as being either the direct or at the least the intermediate agency of creation, and is therefore not a created being, but God, as God alone of all Beings is uncreated, but self-existent.
