I do not think that the US should have an official language. It flies in the face of the principles that this country was founded on. This idea is mostly floated by people who are uncomfortable when they are in a situation where they do not speak the language, and they do not want to be uncomfortable, so they want to force their own language onto everyone. The reality is that to be reasonably "successful" (financially and/or professionally) in this country it is important to know English. For those who chose not to learn, so be it. It should not be a 'requirement.'

READ MINE AND TAKE IT SERIOUSLY PLEASE
Yes it should be.
First of all, there needs to be some official language. Most of the population speaks English.
Also they need to do it before everyone starts to speak Spanish and there is a huge dispute about if the official language should be English or Spanish.
What language is the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution and Bill of Rights in?
What language did you type this question in?
ENGLISH
Also the people who say that The US is a place of diversity are correct. The only thing is that it is the heritage that is diverse, not the people.
Americans need something to bring them together now. We are so sepperated by who's republican and who's democrat and who believes what. A common language could do this somewhat.
And as for what Okatri_ said: Technically, illegals don't have the right to do anything in this country even though liberals try to give them more rights than we have.

Did you honestly know that English not the official language of the US. People its not so stop saying illegals should learn it cause honestly we don't have an official language. I'm sure people would love think that English should be but until Puerto Rico is not associated with the US anymore I don't think its going to happen.
I'm posting this thread because I've been looking through some others and notice a lot of people say.... They should learn english and maybe people wouldn't mind as much, or They should learn english because thats what everyone else speaks, or They should learn english becasue this or this.
I think that english is a really hard language to learn. Hell some Americans can not even get it right!! I know that i have a hard time making things come out right. I do speak english and spanish and its a lot easier for me to live in the world knowing both.
So people please stop saying that illegals from any country should learn english because simply its not our official language!!!

YES. Yes. yes.
Advantage: You can get a better job in the US by knowing English. You can communicate with almost anyone by knowing English in the U.S.
Disadvantage: Unless you're a senior citizen who are unable to learn a different language due to their age and body functions or someone too young to attend school, I don't see any other advantages. People who don't know much English, or didn't attend much school, tend to use the wrong grammar or spell according to what they think is the correct way, not "what is taught in grammar books".

good thing is this is the United States and the language is English, so everyone should learn it. unfortunately there are places like para los ninos a school were the teaching is in spaish and only has one class per grade in english. it is ridiculous children should be learning english not spanish and it is kind of rude when you are in a public place and you see asians talking in their language or any other race speaking everything else but english, one can't tell whether the're talking about, hey! they might be talking about one or making fun.

What is the official language of Japan, Germany, Russia?
They all expect anyone moving to their country to learn the language.
Should we do any less?
Remember, we are the country EVERYONE wants to come to.

The United States was built in immigrants, and even though the mass majority speak English, these immigrants speak a rainbow of languages. If you go somewhere different everyay in the US, you'll find different percentages of those who speak English versus Spanish versus French versus Chinese. It's different everywhere you can go, and that is their way of life.

Yes, that would be great! To those immigrants living in the US who tend not to learn English because they "love" their own culture: for God's sake, you moved to another country! Keep your culture, but learn the language..

If it's not, eventually people will want Spanish to become a co-official language.
