Look for a Makarov. You can get a RRA 1911 for about that. Or a Springfield GI for about that as well.

Look at Ruger as well.

You did not specify new or used so I will assume new. Look for sales in your area. There is always a sale on guns. You can get a Charles Daly/RIA/High Standard 1911 clone (they are all made in the Philippines by the same company) or a Charles Daly Browning Highpower clone (US/Hungarian made) for under $400. With costs of everything going up paying more than $400 on a new SA or SA/DA is so common. If you added another $100 (for a total of $500 spending cash) than a hell of a lot of options would open up (Ruger, S&W, Glock, Taurus, CZ, etc). Don't expect the best out of an automatic centerfire pistol with only $400 to spend if you want something new in the box.

Well Nothena, first things first,Have you shot a SA vs a DA? The DA has a longer trigger pull verses the SA. The SA , well all ya have to do is carry it with a shell in the chamber and to fire all ya got to do fire it is pull back the hammer and pull lightly on the trigger. I prefer the SA cause it does fire faster than the DA.Check Ruger,Smith & Wesson, AMT a thy have what ya want in a blue finish, but or a few 4 more get the stainless model.9mm is Ok but the 40 cal range is where it's at and if you can come up with another $100 it realy opens up your choices to include Colt. A refurbished Colt Commader from the military in 45 cal. is A OK

If you look around, you might be able to find a CZ-75 for about that price, maybe a little more. There's a lot of people who like these pistols, many of which use them at work, and it's a very dependable, durable, design. It's more widely used for government agencies(outside the U.S.) than Glocks, but far less 'chintzy' feeling, as it's not another plastic pistol.

The Ruger P345 is SA/DA and goes for around $400 or less new. It has a 4" bbl.

I like the Ruger's myself, have three of them and love them all. P-95, SP 101, and Security Six each of them was under $400.00. Excellent weapons for the money.
