My brother married a woman right out of the Bulgarian 3rd world, and she has been in the USA since he brought her here 5 yrs ago. They have a little girl who is 4 yrs old and very big for her age. I and my sisters have gone to dinner with them and went to their house for Thanksgiving and it never fails, there little girl always wears her clothes too small. Her mother put her in a size 4 and she really needs to be in a 6. I know this because I have taken her out and bought clothes for her. Her little dresses show her whole rear end and she wears everything way too small. My sister tried to tell them her clothes were to small, but they just dont get it. I think her mother thinks since she is 4, she should wear a 4, but its starting to be a little ridiculous since she started pre school last year. She also puts her in sandals which are too small to go to pre school and its cold here in Illinois. How can we convey gently her kids clothes arent big enough?

Ok. My brothers wife eats raw bacon off the slab and doesnt shave anything, not her armpits, her legs or anything. She also refuses to throw old food out. My brother waits until she leaves and starts tossing stuff. When her mother died, they lay her dead body on the couch in Bulgaria and tossed her in a hole in a wood box and the family dug the hole and covered her up. Pretty 3rd world sounding to me. She never drove or learned how to operate a washing machine until she got here. My brother was so fascinated by her toilet, he took a picture of it....a big hole in the floor which you squat over with 2 grids on each side. Sounds pretty 3rd world to me. I could go on and on and on.
No medical care. They all sleep together in the same bed.

I'm not really sure how the condition of your sister - in - law's country of origin is related to this, so I'll just address the issue of the clothing size. Just say, "You know, not all kids fit into the size for your age. So - and - so is pretty tall; does she fit better in a size or two bigger?" As for the sandals, buy her some sneakers or closed shoes and see if she wears them. Instead of speaking up and causing friction (if she wears sandals, it's beyond me why your brother doesn't say something), the school will surely interfere soon.
Parents really don't like to be told how to raise their kids, so while your intentions are probably good, it's best to try to stay out of it if it's not killing anyone. Wearing a small dress isn't going to cause severe bodily harm to your niece. When and if kids start teasing her, your sister - in - law will pay more attention to the size of her clothes.

She'll get the hint when the teacher sends a note home. Or, say that you want to do something special and get her a special outfit and that you would like to measure her for the outfit. Then be like, "oh my gosh you grew quickly--you're a size six now!" Explain that in this country people spend a lot of money on clothing and that clothing here is a little bigger than there. Also, that sandals are only acceptable in the summertime. I'm in IL too, and there's no way I would send a kid to school in sandals! It's snowing for goodness sakes!

Explain to her that a size 4 doesn't mean that it's for a 4 yo. That the sizes are just guides and the weight and height of the child is what determines the size the child wears. Show her this chart and maybe she will understand.

you could try buying her boots or larger, warmer clothes - just a few - and maybe her mom will get the hint that her other clothes are too small and will see how the other clothes fit better. you could try talking to your brother and get him to explain to her that the numbers dont have to match her age....

Bulgarian 3rd. world? What a derogatory remark! It's not of your business. If you think that they are too small buy her some clothes, if you are not going to do that, shut the f...up. You sound like a snooty, racists, busy body, biatch.

Maybe she can not afford new clothing. You could take her out to a thrift store or good will to help her pick out appropriate clothing for her daughter.
