The best $100 compact digital camera that runs on rechargeable batteries (250 shots or more on AAs) , shoots excellent quality video with sound and has a wonderful review at Steve's Digital.com: it's the 6-megapixel Nikon Coolpix L11 currently selling at samys.com.

Good luck!

Look at the Canons. Get one with a viewfinder and that uses AA batteries. Usually 6 MP are enough for enlargements up to 8x10.

Look at Canon PowerShot A-series. There is a great model -- A630 for abt. $270 and many others. For more details be my guest at: http://fototramp.blogspot.com/2007/11/choosing-digital-compact-camera-canon.html
