Can you answer this with proof please. I am wondering if Micheal is an acceptable Muslim name. I have been told by some that any name that is not offensive and has a good meaning is an acceptable Muslim name. Then some tell me the name must be in arabic. Well Mikail is the name Michael in arabic. Micheal is the name of the angel mentioned in Quran 2:98.

You already gave the correct answer. Muslims should not have any objection to the name. If Christian converts as Muslim, he is not required to change his name unless his original name is offensive to Muslims.

By Name one is recognized and perceived if he is Muslim or Christian or Jew or a Hindu. Since Michael is mostly the name of Christians. Therefore every one immediately think that Michal is Christian. But if he is Muslim, people will mistakenly think him as Christian. For this reason Muslims give names to their chidlren that are mostly known as names of Muslims.

If a Christian person converts to Islam and his name is Michael and he wishes to keep his name, he certainly can keep the name. However each time when some one thinks him to be Christian, he will have to say no, I am Muslim.
If Michael wishes to keep the name so other Christians do not discriminate him (which often happens) that is OK too. Though sooner or later they will know that Michael is a Muslim. And then Michael will be seen as imposter.

From a religious point of view any name that is not derived from the name of a pagan god/goddess is acceptable. However, culturally speaking, Muslims have taken a position that it's better to pick an Arabic or Persian name, so that people would immediately recognize that person as a Muslim without having to ask, even though many non-Muslim Arabs and Zoroastrians have Arabic/Persian names. A name is not just a name; it's also an identity.

i know my country's local artiste bearing the name Ashraf Daniel Sinclair is a Muslim, although he has not one but TWO english names (Daniel and Sinclair), Daniel is a christian name anyway.

So how about that? Can Michael be a Muslim name? Maybe it can. Just don't sport it in the Middle East please.

BISMILLAH HIRRAHMAN NIRRAHEEM,
MIKAIL IS THE NAME OF ANGEL AND IF IS IT IN QUR'AN THEN ITS AN ARABI NAME BECAUSE QUR'AN IS IN ARABI, BUT I DON'T KNOW ABOUT IT THAT MICHAEL IS SAME AS PRONUNCIATION LIKE ARABI MIKAIL PRONUNCIATION. IF IT IS SAME THEN ITS ARABI NAME, HEBREW LANGUAGE IS BELONG TO PROPHET YUSUF AALAIHIS SALAM'S CENTURY, ARABI WORDS ARE RESEMBLE TO HEBREW [IBRANI] WORDS BECAUSE ALL HOLY BOOKS FROM ONLY ALLAH AND THATS WHY THEY ARE RESEMBLE TO EACH OTHER, MESSEGE DELIVER IS SAME, MESSENGER ANGELS ARE SAME, MESSENGER OF ALLAH ARE SAME, MEANS HUMAN [BASHAR].
