You used the wrong stuff.

If you use Leather Luster, you should make sure they are prepared properly before applying it. Also, make sure they are completely dry before wearing them.

I knew someone who would use Parade gloss on their boots them bake them in the oven for a short time.

K-mart also sells a sponge. I can't remember what it is called but it comes in a yellow box and is basically Mink oil and Lemon juice...

Apply polish to your boots with a cloth, spit on them or use a water spray bottle and lightly buff them with the brush. Once they are shined, wipe the sponge over the boots and they will glow like they were leather lustered. The shine will only last a day, but it won me many inspections and CTO day's.

One way to get a good shine is to clean the boots thoroughly, let dry, and then rub in a liberal coat of polish. Let dry and then brush to a shine.

Then take a clean cloth, preferably a T-shirt or a diaper, wrap a portion around two or three of your fingers, dip into a glass of cool water, swipe some Kiwi on them, and begin polishing in circular motions from the toe to the heel, then upward on all sides.

If grit or dirt gets in your polishing, wipe clean, and start your spit-shine again in circular motions.

Once you're satisfied with the over-all shine, take a part of the T-shirt and lightly buff across the boot toe, alongside the heels and flanks. By this time you ought to have an Airborne shine.

The time it takes to put on a spit-shine could give you plenty of time to meditate about the ills of the world and what you can do about it.

I am an expert at shinning boots, I always get them looking like mirrors. The only way you could avoid the cracking is by not shining around the places where your boots bend as you walk.

Parade gloss. Put them in the heat for a short while. Then buff then around the edges.
