Disinfectant - an agent, such as heat, radiation, or a chemical, that destroys, neutralizes, or inhibits the growth of disease-carrying microorganisms. (Applied particularly to agents used on inanimate objects).

This is distinct from an antiseptic, which is a substance that inhibits the growth and development of microorganisms without necessarily killing them.

Disinfectant is any agent used mainly on inanimate objects to destroy or inhibit the growth of vegetative forms of harmful miroorganisms such as bacteria, virus,and fungi. Such agent may be less effective in destroying SPORES.

In simpler definition, it is an agent that frees from infection.
