The God of the Old Testament was wrathful and will probably turn you into salt. The God of the New Testament is loving and will give you 2 Advil and tell you to call him in the morning.

Eternal pain is not a biblical teaching. The symbolic meaning of eternal torment in the lake of fire means destruction or forever forgotten.

" . . . The rich man also died and was buried. In hell, where he was in torment, he looked up and saw Abraham far away, with Lazarus by his side. So he called to him, 'Father Abraham, have pity on me and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, because I am in agony in this fire.' " Luke 16: 22b - 24
Abraham's answer was that there was a great "chasm" and that no one from one side could go to the other.
There is much discussion about whether there is literal flame in hell. Whatever it is, you don't want to go there!
No one has to go there. Trust in Jesus!
