I can think of absolutely no reason why it wouldn't be. As long as you are making certain that the foods you eat meet the requirements your body needs, then it is fine. So just eat the variety of vegan foods necessary to get the proteins, carbs, vitamins, minerals, etc. you need.

Well thought out answers above, all points worth consideration. Having said that I have been vegan for over 10 years and have recently completed an Ironman, a 50km trail run, and a 50 mile trail ultra run, with no noted adverse effects related to diet.
During heavy training, and recovery I do consider iron, total caloric intake, and protein. Frankly it generally comes down to supplementary protein and vitamins for me.
It may be worth looking at a book by a vegan Canadian athlete named Brendan Brazier. I think it is titled "Thrive".

One of the biggest problems with most vegan diets is a lack of protein. Make sure you are getting enough protein some other way and you should be fine.
But also make sure you are getting plenty of carbs for the endurance and energy you need. Going vegan also cuts out alot of breads and pastas since they are made with eggs, but there are other sources as well.

meat and protein give you trace minerals not found in a vegan diet - and some of those traces are needed for strong muscles
hmmmm - safe yes, optimal - not IMHO

YOu need to eat complete proteins so your muscles don't waste away.
YOu can get whey protein to help with that if you don't want to really watch what you eat so carefully.
YOur body will use the muscle you have if you don't eat enough protein to build and maintain your muscles.
I would be very careful if you are a serious athlete.

One other mineral you'll need to supplement: iron. Hemoglobin in red blood cells require iron, and the red blood cells carry oxygen to your muscles, and your muscles get you to the finish line.
There are vegetables that have iron, but you may need an iron supplement to ensure good performance.
