in the 1500's for Catholics. (Martin Luther era.)

p.s. NOT the civil rights activist.

Confession has always been mandatory (private confession since about the 7th century). Christ gave Peter the keys to the kingdom, giving him the power to give absolution in His name.

When I was 10 years old the priest told my mom . I left the church.
