Because the truth often shows something we dislike, or something that we have felt is different than natural processes in the brain. Just like a heart break, or why it hurts when you are wrong when you were so sure of the correct answer

Some people live in their own fantasy. They have their own reality and feel they know it all. Sometimes, it hurts their ego to have their fantasy world blown up.
Or, sometimes, down deep, you know the truth, but you just don't chose to believe it. When someone brings it to your attention, it make it a reality that you struggled not to face.

we lie lie lie and lie some more we are taught as kids its not nice to tell the truth but not to lie to your parents just to everyone else 1) your not fat your just big bone 2) your not ugly but no one will ever marry you and your going to die alone 3) your my best friend even though as soon as you leave i'll have only bad things to say about you its been put in our heads not to say negative things to one another so when someone says something you really dont want to hear its going to hurt hope this helps

You mean like the TRUTH that you're an annoying, gadfly-like little person with an ego ten times the size of what you deserve to have?

truth is indifferent to how people feel and only provided ear candy like today's society does. we're so insecure that we'd rather lie to ourself and tell us that everyone's good and lets all be happy rather than face the cold hard truth.
