We're talking 2 totally different kinds of fear. Fearing God is a reverent fear, and His perfect love for us casts out the other fears we have.

There are two kinds of fear: the fear of punishment and the fear of hurting those we love. Our fear of God should be rooted in our desire never to offend God because we love Him so dearly. Technically speaking, God does not have wrath. We bring evil upon ourselves through sin. Punishment is something that we freely choose by making the decision to sin. The damned are damned by their own decision.

Reverence of who He is. that's fear of the Lord.
The problem today is we see God as only our Father, but not as the King, whose train fills the temple.
The same God who measures the universe with the span of His hand.
The same God who weighed the water of the oceans in the palm of His hand.
The same God who created the stars and calls them all by name.
The same God who knows the number of hairs on all our heads.
The same God who died and paid the price for you.
If you were in His presence, how would you feel?
"for the hills melt like wax in the presence of the Lord."
If His glory can do that, how would you feel before a Holy God?
How would your life compare to His Holiness?
If you can't have reverential awe of Him, the rocks will cry out and praise Him.
The Bible is replete with Scriptures of the fear of the Lord.

The bible says that the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. It also says that to fear God is to hate evil. The fear it is talking about is reverence and respect, not dread and cowering.

1Jo 4:18
There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves torment. But he who fears has not been made perfect in love.
Fear of God is reverence. I love God because He first loved me.

one cannot fear god but in vain. so, some are in vain, and they fear god. but gods nature is love, not fear. and because god is god, he/she has not the need to keep anyone in fear.
fear departs from god. love unites. so making someone fear god, this comes from the devil, to say it loud and clear.
god is even UNCONDITIONAL love. why fear?

Do you love your mom and dad?
Are you afraid of making them upset? Not because they might punish you, but because you are afraid it will make them unhappy?
That's one way to consdier it.
Also, God isn't Santa. If you read the Bible you will find that He does a lot of things that us humans don't like. You have to remeber, He is the creator. He has authority over all creation.
We don't like to admit that, but it's true. God is not a servant to your desires, He does what is best, you don't have to like it.
Good luck with your quest
Joe
