A lot of people were close to the right answer. (Tiger W has all the right elements of the correct answer.)

You have a reasonable amount of time to reach the hole, plus 10 seconds to see if the ball falls in on its own. (Rule 16-2).

The 10 seconds starts when you get to the ball (assuming you don't intentionally waste any time getting there).

The 'reasonable' amount of time depends on where your last shot was taken from. If you tee off from a 190-yard par three, you get a lot of time to reach the hole.

If your last shot was a 5-foot putt, the reasonable amount of time is a lot less.

You can't drop to your knees and whine for 30 seconds about how you missed the putt, or take three laps around the green, and then go to the hole and strat counting.

Are you penalized if the wind blows your tee shot out of bounds or into a hazard? Sure you are. The same applies to a putt. As long as your footsteps don't shake the ball in, it counts.

Once you reach your ball, you are allowed 10 seconds. If the wind blew it in during this time ,you're a lucky person and it does not count as an additional stroke.

You have 10 seconds, but, and this is important, the clock does not start until you start walking towards the hole....so you have 10 seconds from the time you make your way to the hole until it falls in......you can stand there and wait for 2 minutes to start walking towards the hole....but you can take maybe 5 or 6 seconds.....which could be critical....

Good Luck!

Isn't it like 237 divots on a golf ball? I can't remember what John Doe said. LOL!

after the ball stops from your your previous putt, you have 10 seconds after you make your way towards the hole, before you need to tap it in. if it falls in from the wind, an earthquake or just gravity pulling at your ball before that 10 seconds is up, your golden!
