When I was growing up in South Texas all .22 ammo boxes displayed the disclaimer: "Range 1 mile be careful." I suppose that if you held your .22 at a 45 degree angle and fired it you might lob the little bullet that far. I also read a news story once of a man who was shooting in the water near the beach. His .22 bullet skidded along the water and killed a woman a mile away. So much for the exception. The .22 LR in a rifle has a maximum effective range on small game of 50 yards with open sights. You can get another 25 or 30 with a scope.
Best.

The farthest shots I've taken with my scoped rifle have been about 130 yards, still easily breaking clay pigeons. I imagine that would take out a squirrel, but probably not anything much larger at that range.
What you need to do is set up a few gallon jugs of water all in a line, and take a shot from them at 100 yards. See how far the bullet goes though the jugs. That should give you an idea of how much energy you're carrying out that far.

What are you hunting? Anything the size of a medium dog I would say 50-60 yds the size of a rabbit and larger 60-100yds. The Max range of a .22LR is 1 mile firing at a +15 degree angle it doesn't mean it'll kill at that range but it gives a good idea of a shooting distance for hunting.

Especially with light bullet 'hyper` rounds, stay
under 50Yd.s.
A bit beyond there the bullet 'transitions` from
super-sonic to sub sonic and accuracy really
decreases.
