This would make a beautiful coin, to which no possible citizen could object. This would relieve us from the ignominy of heathenism. This would place us openly under the Divine protection we have personally claimed. From my hearth I have felt our national shame in disowning God as not the least of our present national disasters.

To you first I address a subject that must be agitated.

I got curious after reading a question just now. Here's the source, but what is wrong with the argument?

It assumes that the country as a whole recognizes the same god.

Edit:
By the way, now we know more of the story and that it did not originate in the cold war. I assume the same is true for the pledge, but would want to confirm that.

The motto is already there, so I'm not sure why you want to beat a dead horse.

The problem is that it was added to appease an enemy that doesn't exist (God,) and represents an endorsement of theism - a flagrant violation to the First Ammendment of the US Constitution. It will bring me great joy in my lifetime to see that phrase come off the money.

The Constitution outlaws the establishment of a national religion. One single Christian God ( and that is what the reference is to) should have nothing to do with government. The founding fathers would be advocating another revolution.

Those who object to the motto "In God We Trust" believe that our government should be silent on the subject of religion.

(If it were not so, an insolvable problem would arise: Which religion might the government support?)

United States Treasury. Government.

Religious quote. Religion.

Need I say more?

It never should have taken place in the first place.
What are you complaining about? Our money is
already plastered with religious content.

The argument is terribly dishonest and deeply unpatriotic. The United States is better than this, and it's a shame that we allowed Stalin to talk us into this kind of behavior.
