Actually Derby girl is incorrect. You can give up parental custody to enlist, BUT, you sign in your contract that you will not try to regain custody during your first enlistment. The only way you can try to regain custody is if the person with custody cannot take care of the child due to Medical or Psychological problems that arise. You can get chaptered out of the Army if you even attempt to regain custody due to a breech of contract

NONE.

Single parents may NOT ENLIST in any Branch of the Active Duty Military. Only Some Reserves takes single parents.

Single mothers CAN join, and not just in the Army Reserves. They have to give their parents (or the other parent of the child) custody for as long as they will be in training; long enough to cover Basic Training and AIT. Go to your recruiter's station and ask. Get the straight answers from the source, because they have the most current and accurate info. Good luck!
PS-That's great that some folks in here claim to be recruiters, which they very well could have been...FIVE years ago! I know several single mothers in the Army right now, and they were single when they enlisted.

Probably the Air Force. Definitely not the Army.

One out of every five personnel in the Air Force is female. I live near an air base and, despite being a retired Navy Officer, I think they do the best when it comes to childhood development facilities on base and all of the other support functions.

Sorry single mothers can't join. Most have a family care plan to get in the reserves.

Military wife. Just kidding. I don't know if I'd be willing to give up the little time you have with your kid or kids. I think taking care of the children and donating time to supporting our troops would be a better idea. Have you read about the female GI that lost custudy do to being in Iraq? There are lots of ways to support the effort at home. I respect your want to serve but could your children handle it?
