people got stoned to death, pressed, hung and burned at the stake?
Or more recently, a woman was threatened with death because of a teddy bear. What...we haven't learned from our mistakes?
I don't care if you believe in god. I don't care if you worship a pencil. Just don't bring it into the govt. That's what freedom is for. Have we not learned?

The Doctor: Those were dictatorships. America will NEVER be so. That means god/s will NEVER be taken from the people. NO ONE would allow that to happen. It just means to leave ALL gods out of govt. It's not the same thing by far.

No Rob: Islam is VERY much IN the govt in the Middle East. The laws are based on MUSLIM law. See how well that is working?

I am not claiming that they are all one country. I mean in general and there is still Islam law in many of the countries you listed. It's just not nearly as extreme as others

Mitt Romney gives a speech on thursday to explain the role Mormonism plays in his life and decision process.
The media is comparing it to Kennedy's speech on being Catholic.
The difference is that Kennedy was stating that his religion would play no role in his presidency.
A candidate could never give that speech today. That's what scares the daylights out of me. That for a goodly percentage of this country, a person's personal choice of belief systems matters.

First Religion has been the root of many an evil and has never been punished for it. The biggest problem with a religion is that many of it's member truly believe that they are back by God to be above God.
But I must point out and I speak as an agnostic Englishman so you are free to tell me where to go!
I must point out that this scaremongering of the bush admin. has created a strong fundamentalist following, the Christian bashing that goes on here (and even I have done a little e,g. My Q about Avatar and blasphemers) is only playing into the hands of those who wish control you, the moderate mass.
By dividing you and blocking your minds with fear and suspicion, they are steeling what little is left of free America.
It's time for the witch hunting to stop on both side, it's time take the moderate decent people, Atheist and Christian a like stood together against the wolves in sheep's clothing.
Don't group people together and push them away, find and Identify those who use the word of God to do the work of the Devil, (Dress like Santa to steel your toys is the best I can offer to the Atheist)

Anyway do I have come over there and bang your heads together! so you stop fighting amongst yourselves long enough to see whats really going on? !!!!!

In the Book of Revelations it discuss' The fall of babylon the Great the world empire of false religion.babylon the harlot has been having relations with the kings( governments) for eons. This is just one example how governments and the Church are at odds with each other after many of years of scratching each others back. Well guess who is going to be the victor.Neither one.False religion will be devoured by Governments signified by the beast and Jehovah will be victorious.. Babylon the Great has also made conquests, but for the most part, these have been more subtle. She has “made all the nations drink” by using the wiles of a prostitute, committing religious fornication with them. She has enticed political rulers into alliances and friendships with her. Through religious allurements, she has schemed political, commercial, and economic oppression. She has fomented religious persecution and religious wars and crusades, as well as national wars, for purely political and commercial reasons. And she has sanctified these wars by saying they are God’s will. Religion’s involvement in the wars and politics of the 20th century is common knowledge—as in Shinto Japan, Hindu India, Buddhist Vietnam, “Christian” Northern Ireland and Latin America, as well as others—not to overlook the army chaplains’ part on both sides of the two world wars in urging young men to slaughter one another. A classic example of the philandering of Babylon the Great is the share she had in the Spanish Civil War of 1936-39, in which at least 600,000 people were killed. This bloodspilling was provoked by supporters of the Catholic clergy and their allies, in part because the wealth and position of the church was threatened by Spain’s legal government. Since Babylon the Great is the religious part of Satan’s seed, she has always made Jehovah’s “woman,” “Jerusalem above,” her main target. In the first century, the congregation of anointed Christians was clearly identified as the woman’s seed. (Genesis 3:15; Galatians 3:29; 4:26) Babylon the Great tried hard to conquer that chaste congregation by seducing it into committing religious fornication. The apostles Paul and Peter warned that many would succumb and a great apostasy would result. (Acts 20:29, 30; 2 Peter 2:1-3) Jesus’ messages to the seven congregations indicated that toward the end of John’s life, Babylon the Great was making some progress in her efforts to corrupt. (Revelation 2:6, 14, 15, 20-23) But Jesus had already shown how far she would be permitted to go.

wow. people know how to twist a simple question into something not comprehendable and complicated. i find the teddy bear ridiculous. name the bear whatever the hell you want. why dont we just see how long this nation would last if everyone was christian? the few people who know what theyre doing will barely be able to hold the country together for a year. thats just me though. i guess the only people who have truly learned are the only ones who have taken advantage of the freedom of religion.

The separation of church and state preserves what's best about both:

"The separation of church and the state is necessary partly because if religion is good then the state shouldn't interfere with a religious vision or with a religious prophecy. There must be a realm of truth beyond political competence. That's why there must be a separation of churches. But if religion is bad — and a bad religion is one that gives an ultimate sanctity to some particular cause — then religion mustn't interfere with the state. So one of the basic democratic principles as we know it in America is the separation of church and state." - Reinhold Niebuhr

Peace to you.

24 hours a day, seven days a week, year in and year out we have politics completely dominated by religion in that AIPAC determines who will or will not be elected to federal office, and AIPAC will see to it that no one wins other than the candidate they support. That's why we are in Iraq. Jewish domination of the political system has been and will continue to be a disaster for our country. No religious group should be permitted to dominate to the point of control all of our policies, even a wealthy minority.

PS: Where on earth did you get the idea that Islam is "in" what you call "the government" in "the Mideast"? Iraq had a secular government,as does Syria,Lebanon,Jordan,Turkey and Egypt. The only countries in "the Mideast" that incorporate state religion are Saudi Arabia,Israel and Iran. There is also no one single central government in the Mideast.

does the US mix religion with the government?
because i'm sure some iraqi kids have lost parents and a limb or two (woops, did i say only 'some'??). not to mention the actual butchering of lives through wars by the thousands and more. it's not religion that's a problem, it's money and GREED that's killing far more people.

I have and want to ensure that church and state is separated from each other. However, since mainstream religion (Christianity) is in our government the wall of separation will vary from time to time.

Apparently not. It seems the president ( and the ones running) want to bring in even more god. Which I'm sure makes the Christians happy.

Yes this is why in the Treaty after the Battle of Tripoli our founding fathers wrote and signed specifically, "America is NOT a Christian Nation." It's not that it's not made up of people who profess Christian faith in their homes and churches, but that they're guided by Logic and secularism when dealing with government.
