Is it reliable to purchase a car from craigslist.com??

Craigslist is a service that puts buyers and sellers into contact with each other, much like the classified ads in the newspaper. You should take the same precautions you would take in that situation: have the car checked out by an independent mechanic, look up the blue book value, etc.

Buying a car is nerve racking no matter where you buy it. I just sold my car on craigslist.com and I am an honest person. I told the buyer everything about the car; the good, the bad, and the ugly.

As other answers suggest, you should take the same precautions on Craigslist.com that you would anywhere else. I found it a bit scary to sell the car on Craigslist.com though. There were a lot of creepy responses. Out of over 20 responses only 3 were people that I wasn't worried about.

Good luck to you in finding the car that you want, where ever you decide to buy it.

You don't actually buy a car from craigslist. You only find a seller.

It's best to find sellers in your local area so that you can meet them, see the car, inspect the car, drive the car, have the car checked by a mechanic, see the title to the car, get a bill of sales, check the car's history on CarFax, and drive it away.

It can be just as reliable buying from Craigslist as it can be buying from a used car dealer that just opened up shop.

You have to do your due diligence and get the Carfax on the car, get a mechanic to look over the car, get a bill of sale and get the title when you pay.

It's as reliable as you make it! Like the others have said, compare its value (KBB, NADA, Edmunds, etc) and thoroughly research the vehicle. Always deal in person and ensure that all your bases are covered if you buy (Carfax check, vehicle inspection, bill of sale, notarized title...) Number one is safety when dealing with strangers! Always bring a buddy or two with you. I just purchased a used car off of craigslist and couldn't be happier with it!

Not much different than buying from a wheel deals or something. Craigslist is categorized by your location so you should be able to go check the car out first..

It can be. You just need to use common sense and follow the guidelines to protect yourself from getting scammed. It is best to buy locally and check the car with a mechanic before you buy it. Using common sense and caution is a must.

it's like any other classified, so you need to be careful. I am sure it isn't fool proof, but it is a legit site. I have purchased things from there before (albeit not a car) and have never had a problem. Just use your head, and you should be fine.

Sure... as long as you meet them in a public place locally, bring along a mechanic or a family friend who knows alot about cars who can check the engine over, etc.... Good luck!
