...is it "better" for you to walk faster for a shorter distance, or walk slower for a longer distance? Example: Is it better to walk 2 miles, but take an hour and a half to do it, or walk 1 mile in a 10 or 15 minute span? Is speed or distance most important?

A lot depends on your age and fitness levels. For a healthy heart you need to make your heart muscles work. This means that picking up the pace a little is more beneficial. If your wanting to lose weight and are quite unfit, walk at a pace that is comfortable ie. you can still talk while you are walking.... and jog for 30 or 60 seconds every now and then. This picks up your heart rate and burns more calories even once you slow down again. For fat burning you really need to increase your heartrate and keep it that way for 30 minutes.

My motto is easy does it. Why wear yourself out? Then you get discouraged. Hint: taking tiny steps for the same distance- burns more calories. and big strides usually injure your back.
do a mile in 18 or mile and a half in 30. comfortable shoes make a difference too
