How is it that so many people don't know the difference between fiction and reality? I can remember back more than 30 years ago there were wakos trying to get Star Wars banned because they were afraid that people would join "the force" as a new religion. 15 years ago they were calling for a ban on Barney because he had taken on demi-god status. Then there's the whole Harry Potter leads to witchcraft thing. Where do these wacko come from? How come they can't tell the difference between fiction and reality?

Remember when the Teletubbies were teaching our children to be gay?
Or the constant Harry Potter trashing.
The Fundies are always yapping about something.

This is something I have never totally understood.
At age 53, I am a total Wizard of OZ fan. and I know the difference between truth and fiction. I read the first two Harry Potter books, before I was bored of the whole thing, yet NOT DEMONIZED!!!!
Star Wars! well one of my favorites, the first three any how!
OH OH! then there is Shrek! Ogres, dragons and imaginary creatures! Whoops! caught again! One Christian doomed for an IMAGINARY, NON EXISTANT..,...H E L L !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

well considering many people put down Jedi as their religion on the census forms maybe they were right :)

I plan on reading this book and seeing this moviejust to piss off the protesters. when will they learn that their pathetic yammering just serves to raise interest in the book or film they are attacking? Look at Dogma, awful movie (and this from a Kevin Smith fan) but all the screaming pushed it into the black!

You don't seem to understand what the fuss is about. It's not that people think the events depicted in The Golden Compass are real, it's that the author of the books on which the film is based is an aggressive atheist. He has openly admitted on several occasions that his work is intended to introduce the concept of atheism to children. I doubt Hollywood really caught onto that aspect of the story (as much as they caught onto the theist themes in The Chronicles of Narnia) because I doubt they would produce a film with those connotations if they knew. This kind of thing is hell on profits... no pun intended.

Personally, I don't want to show my kids any movies that have underlying religious themes, be it The Golden Compass, The Chronicles of Narnia, Veggie Tales or whatever. Entertaiment should be exactly that... no sparsely-veiled religious (or anti-religious) symbolism for me, thanks. I'll be putting that job in the hands of more responsible parties, and only if my kids want it.

Go see the movie.Enjoy it if its good If you have young kids explain to the you can not kill God or what ever the movie conveys . Most of the movies are either Anti Christian , Anti God , Anti Christ , Anti Family you get the picture.
If people would get off their butts and talk the time to talk to there kids instead of letting them get there ideas of how to live and what to believe from mainstream T.V. and movies their children would have a strong foundation and movies like this would not shake them

Yes it's sad. My daughter was so excited about seeing that movie, it's right up her alley on action etc. But then her right wing fundamentalist dad(my ex) filled her head with the idea that she will be sinning if she goes to see it.
So I told her we are definitely going to see it. She lives with me full time, him two weekends a month.
But she is so terrified of her dad's wrath if she sees it. Makes me sick.

Because this movie is based on a book which has the sole purpose of 'killing God in the minds of children.'

Of course it is. Christians do this kind of thing constantly. They're like whiney children.
