Codec is a system to encode/decode a digital stream: examples MPEG-1, MPEG-2, H.264, etc.

AVI is not a codec, it is a file container. AVI supports multiple codecs: DV, Divx, xvid, etc.

AVI is a very popular file for Divx-coded media.
So, if ps3 gets divx support it should be able to play .avi files with a divx codec, or maybe even .divx files.

Okay you've downloaded a Divx Avi file, now you want to convert it to play on you DVD player, this is what you will need, get a copy of Divx for Windows and WinAVI to convert your avi files to dvd also most AVI files are set as PAL and you will need to change that to NTSC you can change it with WinAVI, this will make your dvd work on your dvd player. If you need help just let me know and I will explain it to you step by step.
