When you go to muslim countries they advice you not to give gifts to kids, or else you get killed. I don't know about giving gifts to adults.

Unless your atheists friends are the REALLY stuffy, aristocratic type, I'm pretty sure that they wouldn't object to free stuff no matter when it's being passed out. :]
I'm not sure if a Muslim would be offended or not.
