I own several different calibers of guns. By different manufactures. Including Savage. Remington and Browning.
Savage makes a very respectable gun. Not the prettiest looking stock. However I have found them to be very rugged and reliable.
Using 150 grains. If you sight in your 270 at 3 inch’s high at 100 yards you will find the drop to be only about 6 inch’s at 300.
Here is a good ballistic link to view.

I have a Savage 10FP, which is essentially the same thing you've got in a short action, and with a heavier barrel. Mine has a few other goodies, like an extra forward sling swivel and parkerized bolt. I beat the snot out of this rifle, and it still shoots great. I had a Remington 700 in .300WBY Mag(more power than a .300 Win Mag) and it started to lose it's accuracy due to the receiver warping. It had gobs of recoil, and apparently just couldn't take it anymore. The locking lugs didn't quite fit right, the holes in the stock were getting elongated, and the recoil lug was bending. I might have just gotten a bad 700, but I didn't feel like chancing it twice, so I opted for the Savage when the choice came, and I haven't regretted it since. I'd suggest you do the same, and worse case scenario, you'll have to sell it and be out no more than $100 off the original price.

Savage is a very nice gun for the price. They are known for their accuracy and quality of the barrels. Some people don't like the stock design and I've heard some of them have rough feeling actions. I've never noticed any of those problems though. In a .270 I normally zero my rifle in at around 3" high at 100 yards. Savage is a good gun and certainly worth hunting with.

I had a bad experience with savage but I have heard their rifles are surprisingly accurate and not just for the price.
I would sight in at 100 and get a feel for how the bullet changes at 50 and 200.
I have never shot a deer past75 yards but I hunt in the woods

Savage may not be as refined as others but they are accurate and reliable.
We may offer a little difference of opinion on sighting range since we don't know where you live. Since you want the .270, I think you may be looking at up to 200 yards. If so, Sight in at 100 yards.

Yes, you have a very good gun..... Savage has been around since the late 1800's from Ithaca NY.... and they are a very good firearms company... I have a Savage 30-06 with the accu trigger..... nice and accurate rifle.... im happy with it. perfect for hunting, solid and smooth action.... very nice. It is up to you at what range you want to site it in at I sighted mine in at 200 meters..... you can do 100 if you want....

You have a good hunting rifle. I'd sight it in about an inch high at a hundred yards. This will give you some leverage if you mis-estimate your range in the field.
Best.

Savage makes fine rifles, built to hunt, my friend! they may not win any beauty contests, but they will shoot good.
