Exactly! If God came down and made everything right, then there'd be no point to faith! Everyone'd believe in Him because they've seen Him, but that's not what He wants. He wants believers to follow because they love Him.

I'm not sure about the free will part, but if God showed himself to us, I would guess that this WAS part of his plan.

If that happened you would have no choice other than to obey and recognize that He is God.
If God showed him/her self to us, we would be obedient out of pure fear instead of Love. We would do the things we do and act in different ways that weren't of our true selves.
If a theif knows he's under surveillance, he's probably not going to steal, but if it remains unknown, you see his true colors and he acts out what is inside of him. Anyone can behave for show, few can do it for integrity.
It is the very nature of God to give us JUST enough to keep our faith, but not enough to destroy our free will.
Jesus said, after Thomas had to touch his wounds to believe, John 20:29 "Thomas, because you have seen Me, you have believed. Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed." I believe this verse is transparent to todays world as well.

Free will? 3/4 of the world will carry on the religious beliefs of their parents, though many change denominations. Child indoctrination is highly psychological. There really isn't much free will behind religious belief.

I do not see how that would get in the way of free will. Adam had free will and it says that he walked with God in the afternoons.

God is not a person. God is a Spirit, beyond time, gender, and space. God is in you, and everything in God's creation. Does that answer your question?
