Usually Unleaded Gasoline between 89 and 93 octane.
The most common alternative is the diesel engine which obviously from the name, runs on Deisel fuel which is cleaner burning and more efficient, but is louder, different to maintain, and not as popular as a mainstream engine, therefore deisel fuel right now costs more than regular gasoline.
The other source that cars are being powered by now is electricity. These hybrid cars can run off gasoline some of the time, and run straight off of batteries other parts of the time. This is a very efficient way of saving fuel, but not necessarily saving money or the environment. Hybrids are very expensive to buy and maintain, and the working conditions and environment where the batteries are being mined are not always up to par. Also, disposing of byproducts is causing a lot more pullution than people realize. So if you are looking to save money at the pump I suggest a Honda Civic or something else that runs on gasoline but gets decent mileage, or a hybrid if you have the extra money to spend initially and plan on keeping the car for at least 10 years.
hope this info helps. I get on these tangents sometimes and respond to a question with a 2 page essay, when the question is pretty vague.lol
