I'm so glad someone called them out on this. I made the mistake of spelling atheist wrong. Everyone bashed me on that, but didn't answer the question with an intelligible response. Very interesting.

Everything one does in this life is a mirror to the character within. Bad language use, including poor spelling, indicates a sub-standard education and/or sheer laziness. A potential employer with high standards, as an example, would immediately place your application on the back-burner.
Therefore, any question containing poor grammar, or spelling, reflects upon the validity of the questioner, especially when that person bleats on about god being so important in their life. The two seem to go hand in hand - questionable intelligence + belief in an invisible and silent wizard in the sky.
This is an intelligent response, free of spelling errors and using correct sentence construction - a real benefit to efficient communication.
I know how to answer questions. I know how to communicate efficiently and I care about language use, even if you don't.
Now try asking a question which challenges my intelligence rather than insults it.

Thank you so much for this. I agree with you. However, I just made some spelling errors on an Edit to a Q I asked that made me look like an idiot. Instead of the word Go and the next word began with a d, I mistyped and it looked like God. Then I misspelled peace and it probably confused those reading it when I said something about peace in a sentence that had the word tapestry in it. I spelled peace PIECE and so it gave the wrong impression. And then I could not edit my edit on the Q I wrote, so I looked like a jerk.

So thank you. I'm not sure if someone makes an error or they meant it that way unless I ask. So it doesn't matter to me how it's spelled if I can figure it out.

Thanks for your compassion, I wish we all would show a little more of this to one another on Answers.
Thanks a million again. :)

It's Ad Hominem (from latin: Argument against the man), its a logical fallacy, that basically boils down to attacking the person rather than their argument.

Basic idea:
Mr. X makes some claim
Mr. Y says that because Mr. X is a bad person, his claim is wrong

On the flip side, I must admit that often bad spelling and bad points go hand in hand. (not to mention it can give the impression that someone is less intelligent, even if its not the case)

When (capitalize!)

don't

response,

don't (again)

(Might I also suggest "...just because you...", sounds better IMO)
-----------------

There, that feels better. And no, it's just annoying when people can't bother to spell correctly. And most definately it's important to know what some words are.

Would you like to try to answer a question that goes like: "Would you like me to (don't know the word)?"... you'd have no idea what I was asking.

And I never bother correcting spelling errors unless I'm also at the same time answering the question. QED.

I usually point out the spelling error and then answer the question, just so the person knows I know how to spell and am not just avoiding the question.

I do care about spelling BECAUSE I am an intellectual. Being an intellectual and having mostly intelligent answers, why would I NOT correct a question I deem worthy of my time to answer?

If a person doesn't care enough about their own language to try to use it properly; I seriously have to question if they even care if my answer is intelligent.

There is a difference between a person writing "shure", "wat" and "ur", which is obvious lack of concern and something like "soemthing" which is obviously a typo.

Spelling and grammar are important. It is difficult to take people seriously who don't care or can't write a decent sentence (I personally give people a break if English is not their first language, but you can usually tell when people are just too lazy to use a spellchecker - I wish we had a spellchecker function when I was growing up!!! You kids have it easy!).

Simple: proper spelling and grammar is a mark of intelligence, and if you demonstrate a lack thereof by messing up the language, people are unlikely to suppose that you know what you are talking about.

You can always hit the 'Check Spelling' button...

I only point this out when the questioner takes a condescending tone, as if they're more intelligent than me.
